My experience includes:

  • 14 years of experience as a swim instructor

  • AED/CPR/First Aid Certified (adult, child and baby)

  • Completed Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Water Safety for Caregivers courses

  • One year of experience working exclusively with children with physical and intellectual disabilities or limitations as well as sensory disorders

  • I speak basic Spanish

  • I know basic ASL

About me:

My name is Shannon McCarthy. I’ve been a swim instructor for 14 years. I swam competitively in high school and college. I’m passionate about sharing this fun, live-saving sport with as many people as I can. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Florida State University. I’m originally from south Florida, but I've lived in several places around the world including Puerto Rico, New Zealand and Colorado. I moved to Gainesville, Florida in 2022. In my free time, I love camping, hiking, reading, swimming and enjoying nature.

About Wavy Swim Lessons:

I established Wavy Swim Lessons, LLC in 2022. I travel to your home or community pool to provide private swim lessons. My goal is to provide affordable lessons for persons of all ages and all abilities in the Gainesville area.

My Approach:

I recognize that each swimmer is different and I like to move at an individualized pace. I know that swimming can be scary at first, so I like to take extra time to build confidence and comfort in the water before rushing into skills. I particularly love working with adults who have a fear of the water as well as children with disabilities or sensory disorders.
